NYC Carbon Challenge CO2e Emissions: Emissions are normalized on a per-square foot basis. This is among our most important long-term sustainability metrics, and takes growth and contraction of the University into account. The red trend line represents our current commitment over the coming years. An additional 5% reduction is allowed through the purchase of RECs (Renewable Energy Certificates).
Current vs Projected Emissions: A 15 year outlook on The New School’s CO2 reduction commitment, and anticipated change in portfolio profile. Oil will be replaced by natural gas and thus gas consumption will increase over time, however, gas is less carbon-intensive fuel than oil.

Total CO2e Emissions: Total historical emissions since 2006 at The New School, and our goal to reduce emissions 40% over the coming 15 years.
Emissions by Source: A snapshot of the sources (Scope 1 & 2) of the The New School’s emissions. Electricity use is the dominant cause of The New School’s emissions.
Portfolio Carbon Impact: Total carbon emissions released as a result of energy consumed by each building on campus.
Detailed Emissions Projections: A look at some of the measures The New School is taking, and the projected long-term impact they will have in reducing emissions.
Annual Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s):
-
- Units of Measurement: lb/sf-yr
- Why it's Important: CO2e is a measure of carbon emissions on a per-square foot basis. It’s the best measure of our carbon emissions and takes into account the University’s growth or contraction in the future.
- How we'll Achieve our Goals: More efficient heating and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, lighting upgrades, maintenance procedures, tighter building envelopes , improved human behavior, and conversions in our heating systems from oil to natural gas.
Normalized CO2e -
- Units of Measurement: Metric tons
- Why it's Important: A measure of the University’s total carbon impact.
- How we'll Achieve our Goals: Similar to how we achieve our normalized CO2e goals, but our progress on this goal also is impacted by any addition or reduction to the total number of buildings that make up The New School’s campus.

Progress Analysis:
-
CO2 Emissions per square-foot: reduced 4.7% this fiscal year, and 7.7% in total over baseline.
-
Total CO2 emissions: Also reduced by the same amount as above, however, continued reductions also depend on the proportional square footage of the campus.
